Andalusia amazed me at the Usual in downtown San Jose. I've been following the band's progress for the past two and a half years, and I really like the direction they're taking. Their haunting ethereal sound has been reduced to an instrumental lineup : Kirsten on bass, John on drums, and Cam on guitar. I don't know if this is a logical progression (considering they have previously had female lead singers, and the second was better than the first), because now all there is left is the orchestration of the music. Hearing them live (without a singer) was enough to make up my mind, the music is far more dynamic without a human voice and lyrics to focus on. It allows the listener to let their subconscious take over, and be reached on a deeper, more spiritual level. When I heard that they have a CD available, I tried to purchase one after the show. These people are so cool, they insisted on giving me the 3 song ep, this is noplace, for free. What can I say, other than being a loyal fan has it's rewards? When I got home, I popped the CD into my Mac, and I was blown away. I checked the back of the CD sleeve to make sure it wasn't put out by 4AD or Creation! This ep is amazing! It takes you on a musical journey through dreamy landscapes, thunderous storms, and new horizons. Truly, the best CD I have heard all year. My only complaint is that there are only three songs. Lesson learned : the best things in life are always free. |
