Singer/guitarist Chris Gunst's honey-dripped voice, often accompanied by the soft backdrop of bassist Brent Rademaker's tenor, glide over the music like a babbling brook. Aaron Sperske's tastefully sparse drums kick in at all the right times, and "Farmer Dave" Scher juggles the slide guitar and keyboards with the practiced precision of an experienced marksman.
Their self-titled debut album from Subpop holds many, but not all, of their live performance favorites, including the bah bah bah bah bah of "Sister Rose," and their theme song, "This Is What It Feels Like." On stage, Beachwood Sparks projects the same kind of escapist, simpler life that is felt on the album. Wearing easy smiles and western button down shirts, they bring a haze of relaxation with them wherever they go. Before you even realize they are playing, the clear, sparkling tones of their comforting music has begun to pull you under like a warm, oversized blanket.
